Parental incarceration and future healthcare use: A Norwegian cohort study

This study examines whether a child’s first experience of parental incarceration is followed by changes in healthcare use over the next five years. Using linked Norwegian registry data, we compare affected children with similar children who had not yet experienced parental incarceration.
The study focuses on:

Primary care, specialist care, and total healthcare contacts

Norwegian birth cohorts from 1999 to 2001

Risk-set sampling and ATT weighting to improve comparability

Five-year healthcare trajectories following the first parental incarceration
Preliminary findings show higher use of both primary and specialist care, with the largest increase in specialist services. The results suggest that parental incarceration may represent an important turning point in children’s contact with the healthcare system.
